Polly H. Hix Institute for Research and Conservation
On March 21, 2003, the staff of the Indianapolis Zoological Society announced and celebrated the formation of the Polly Horton Hix Institute for Research and Conservation, an initiative that supports the Society’s current and future research and conservation programs. The institute is funded by an endowment given to the Indianapolis Zoo by Polly H. Hix. The Zoo's educational programming also falls under the auspices of the Hix Institute.
By funding this endowment, the Indianapolis Zoo can ensure that it will have the resources in terms of staff, facilities and funding to undertake a select number of internationally significant research and conservation efforts, and to assure that these efforts will have the maximum impact on the conservation of flagship species and their habitats. With the endowment and its income in place, the Institute is able to sustain existing long-term programs while giving the Zoo the opportunity to expand its conservation efforts in the years to come.
The Indianapolis Zoo honors Polly H. Hix for this outstanding contribution to the welfare of animals, and thanks all those who participated in the gala celebration of this extraordinary event.
“Animals have always been a big part of my life, and I’ve been involved with the Zoo on so many things over the last several years. It’s been great fun for me to participate, to make such good friends, and to be a part of the wonderful work the Zoo does every day to help educate adults and children on the importance of conserving the plants and animals of the Earth. I’ve been very happy to help when I can, and the formation of this Institute is a wonderful opportunity for me to contribute something meaningful to research and conservation efforts for endangered and threatened animal species. It is my privilege and honor to help.” -Polly Horton Hix
